Tsoede

16th century · 16th century · Also known as Edegi

Tsoede, also called Edegi, is the legendary founder of the Nupe Kingdom in the middle Niger valley of present-day Nigeria. Nupe tradition makes him a son of an Attah of Igala by a Nupe mother, who travelled up the Niger, united the Nupe chiefdoms in the early 16th century and founded a capital at Gbara. Bronze figures and other regalia attributed to him were long kept as royal relics.
