Turnip Winter

1916–1917 · 20th century · Also known as Steckrübenwinter

The Turnip Winter was the severe food crisis in Germany in the winter of 1916–1917, during the First World War, when a failed potato harvest and the British naval blockade left many civilians depending on turnips, normally used as animal fodder. Hunger, disease and malnutrition killed many people and badly damaged civilian morale and trust in the government.
