Ulick de Burgh

d. 1343 · 14th century

Ulick de Burgh was the founder of the Clanricarde Burkes of south Galway. After the murder of his kinsman William Donn de Burgh, Earl of Ulster, in 1333, he seized the family's lands in southern Connacht and took the Gaelic title Mac William Uachtar, ruling from Loughrea. His family adopted Irish law and customs, and his descendants were made earls of Clanricarde in 1543.
