Ulleungdo

Also known as Ulleung Island

Ulleungdo is a volcanic island in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), about 120 kilometres off the east coast of Korea. It was the centre of the small state of Usan, which the Silla general Isabu subdued in 512 according to the Samguk sagi. Under the Joseon dynasty it was long left uninhabited by official policy, and resettlement began in the 1880s; it now belongs to North Gyeongsang Province of South Korea.
