Urumqi
Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, lying in an oasis on the northern side of the Tian Shan. A small settlement in earlier centuries, it grew after the Qing conquest of Dzungaria in the 1750s as a garrison town called Dihua, and became the provincial capital in 1884. It is now the largest city of Xinjiang.
