Vandal conquest of North Africa

429–439 CE · 5th century

The Vandal conquest of North Africa was the seizure of Roman Africa by the Vandals and Alans between 429 and 439 CE. Crossing from Spain under King Gaiseric, they captured Carthage in 439 and established a kingdom that controlled much of the western Mediterranean. Accounts of the Garamantian Empire place this disruption of Roman North Africa in the context of the Garamantes' decline.
