Varkhuman

fl. 650s–660s · 7th century

Varkhuman was king of Samarkand in the mid-7th century. Tang China recognised him as ruler of Kangju around 658. He is named in an inscription on the Ambassadors' Painting at Afrasiab, a palace mural that shows envoys from China, Korea, the Turks and other peoples arriving at his court, one of the finest surviving works of Sogdian art.
