Vasco de Quiroga

c. 1470–1565 · 16th century

Vasco de Quiroga was a Spanish judge and churchman who became the first bishop of Michoacán in Mexico. Sent to New Spain as a judge of the second Audiencia in 1531, he founded hospital-villages for indigenous people inspired by Thomas More's Utopia, and as bishop from 1538 he organised the Purépecha communities around Lake Pátzcuaro, giving each a craft of its own. He is still remembered in Michoacán as 'Tata Vasco'.
