Vasile Lupu

1595–1661 · 17th century

Vasile Lupu was Prince of Moldavia from 1634 to 1653, a wealthy ruler of Albanian descent whose long reign brought relative prosperity. He built the Church of the Three Hierarchs in Iași, set up a printing press, and issued the law code Carte românească de învățătură (1646). His ambitions in Wallachia and an alliance with the Cossack leader Bohdan Khmelnytsky led to his overthrow in 1653.
