Velleius Paterculus

c. 19 BCE – after 30 CE · 1st century

Velleius Paterculus was a Roman soldier and historian who served under Tiberius in Germany and Pannonia. His short Roman history in two books, dedicated to the consul Marcus Vinicius in 30 CE, is a contemporary source for the reign of Augustus and the early years of Tiberius, whom it praises warmly. It includes a description of the kingdom and army of Maroboduus.
