War of the Emboabas

1707–1709 · 18th century

The War of the Emboabas was a conflict in the gold fields of Minas Gerais, Brazil, between the Paulistas who had discovered the gold and the newcomers from Portugal and other parts of Brazil, called emboabas. The newcomers, led by Manuel Nunes Viana, drove the Paulistas from the main mining districts. The crown responded by creating the Captaincy of São Paulo and Minas de Ouro in 1709.
