Wen Yanbo

1006–1097 · 11th century · Also known as Kuanfu

Wen Yanbo, courtesy name Kuanfu, was a scholar-official of the Song dynasty who served four emperors over more than five decades and was a grand councilor under Emperor Renzong. After passing the imperial examination in 1027 he was magistrate of Yicheng County and controller-general of Jiang Prefecture before serving as a censor in the capital, Kaifeng. When the Tanguts declared their state of Western Xia in 1038 and invaded, he advised that front-line marshals be allowed to punish subordinate generals for desertion and cowardice without first asking the court. In 1040 he showed that General Huang Dehe, who had fled and accused the captured General Liu Ping of defecting, had lied.
