Person
William Tolbert
William Tolbert was the 20th president of Liberia, serving from 1971, when he succeeded William Tubman, until 1980. Leader of the True Whig Party, he faced growing opposition, and a proposed rise in the price of rice led to deadly riots in Monrovia in April 1979. He was killed in the military coup of 12 April 1980 led by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe, which ended more than a century of True Whig rule.
