Władysław I Łokietek

1261–1333 · 14th century · Also known as Władysław the Elbow-high, Wladyslaw I the Elbow-high

Władysław I Łokietek, 'the Elbow-high', was a Piast duke of Kuyavia who spent decades fighting rival dukes, Bohemia and the Teutonic Knights for the fragmented Polish lands. He held smaller duchies such as Brześć Kujawski, Łęczyca and Sieradz on his way to power, and in 1320 was crowned King of Poland at Kraków, ending almost two centuries of division. His son Casimir III the Great built on his work.
