Piast dynasty

c. 960–1675 · 10th century · Also known as Piasts

The Piast dynasty was the first historical ruling house of Poland, from Mieszko I, baptised in 966, to the death of Casimir III the Great in 1370. After 1138 the realm fragmented into duchies held by rival Piast branches in Silesia, Masovia, Kuyavia and elsewhere. The Masovian line died out in 1526 and the last Silesian Piast, George William of Legnica and Brzeg, in 1675.
