Yamato court

c. 250–710 · 3rd century · Also known as Yamato polity, Yamato kingship

The Yamato court was the ruling power of early Japan, centred on the Yamato region around modern Nara, from which the Japanese imperial line descends. Between the third and seventh centuries it extended its authority over much of the archipelago and built the great keyhole-shaped burial mounds. Its close ties with Baekje brought Chinese writing, Buddhism and skilled craftsmen to Japan.
