Yi Hwang

1501–1570 · 16th century · Also known as Toegye

Yi Hwang, known as Toegye, was one of the two greatest Neo-Confucian philosophers of Joseon Korea. After a career as an official he retired to teach at his academy at Dosan, near Andong. His interpretation of Zhu Xi, set out in works such as the Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning and in a famous debate on the Four-Seven question, influenced later Korean thought and Japanese Neo-Confucianism, and he appears on the South Korean 1,000-won note.
