Youth Pledge

1928 · 20th century · Also known as Sumpah Pemuda

The Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) was the declaration made on 28 October 1928 at the Second Indonesian Youth Congress in Batavia. Delegates of regional youth organisations pledged loyalty to one motherland, one nation and one language, Indonesian, adopting the Malay-based language as the language of unity. The song 'Indonesia Raya', later the national anthem, was first performed at the congress, and the date is commemorated every year in Indonesia.
