Zhangsun Sheng

551–609 · 6th century

Zhangsun Sheng was a Chinese general and diplomat of the Northern Zhou and Sui dynasties who specialised in relations with the Turks. Having lived at the Turkic court, he advised the Sui founder Emperor Wen to divide the khaganate by backing rival khans, summed up as befriending the distant and attacking the near. His policy helped split the First Turkic Khaganate into eastern and western halves.
