Zones for Employment and Economic Development

2013–2022 · 21st century · Also known as ZEDE

Zones for Employment and Economic Development (ZEDEs) were semi-autonomous charter cities permitted under a Honduran law of 2013, with their own legal, tax and administrative systems run largely by private investors. The best known, Próspera on the island of Roatán, drew international attention and criticism over sovereignty and land rights. The National Congress repealed the law in 2022.
