Zürichgau

The Zürichgau was an early medieval district (Gau) of Alemannia, covering the land around Lake Zürich and the Limmat between the Reuss and the Thurgau. Recorded from the Carolingian period, it was later divided among lordships held by families such as the counts of Lenzburg, Kyburg and Habsburg, while the town of Zürich became an imperial city.
