Chahamanas of Naddula
Origins
Around 950 Lakshmana, a younger member of the Chahamanas of Shakambhari, carved out a kingdom at Naddula, modern Nadol in the Pali district of Rajasthan. Inscriptions and later bardic tradition, where he appears as Rao Lakhan, record the founding.
Rule and society
The Naddula Chahamanas held the southern Marwar plains and the routes between Gujarat and the north. They fought the Paramara dynasty and the Chaulukya dynasty, and from the 12th century often served the Chaulukyas as feudatories; Alhana and his son Kelhana fought in Chaulukya campaigns. The kings and their nobles supported both Shaiva and Jain temples, and Nadol has many Jain shrines.
Decline and legacy
Qutb al-Din Aibak attacked Nadol in 1197, ending the main line. A branch founded by Kirtipala, son of Alhana, moved to Jalor, where the Songara Chauhans ruled until Alauddin Khalji took the fort in 1311.
