Chahamanas of Shakambhari

650 CE – 1194 CE (approx.) · capital Ajmer

The Chauhan Rajput dynasty of Sambhar and Ajmer, whose king Prithviraj Chauhan fought Muhammad of Ghor at Tarain.

Origins

Tradition names Vasudeva, said to have discovered the Sambhar salt lake, as the dynasty's founder in the 7th century. The early Chahamanas ruled the Sapadalaksha country around Shakambhari, modern Sambhar in Rajasthan, as feudatories of the Gurjara-Pratihara. Vigraharaja II asserted independence in the 10th century, as recorded in the Harsha inscription of 973.

Rule and society

Ajayaraja founded Ajmer around 1113 and made it the capital, and Arnoraja built the Ana Sagar lake. Vigraharaja IV took Delhi from the Tomara dynasty and wrote a Sanskrit play inscribed on stone in Ajmer. The Chahamanas fought the Paramara dynasty, the Chaulukya dynasty and the Ghaznavids. Their state rested on a warrior nobility, revenue from agriculture and the Sambhar salt trade.

Decline and legacy

Prithviraja III defeated Muhammad of Ghor at the first battle of Tarain in 1191, but lost the second in 1192 and was executed. A relative ruled Ajmer under Ghurid protection until 1194, and the branch at Ranthambore continued. Prithviraj became a hero of Rajput legend through the Prithviraj Raso.
