Chahamanas of Ranastambhapura
Origins
After Prithviraj Chauhan (Prithviraja III) of the Chahamanas of Shakambhari fell to Muhammad of Ghor in 1192, his son Govindaraja was installed as a Ghurid vassal and moved to the fortress of Ranthambore (Ranastambhapura) in eastern Rajasthan. His descendants ruled there as a separate Chauhan line.
Rule and society
The dynasty depended on Ranthambore, one of the strongest hill forts of north India, and alternated between submission to and revolt against the Delhi Sultanate; Iltutmish captured the fort in 1226, but the Chauhans regained it. Hammira expanded the kingdom by raids into Malwa and Mewar. Sanskrit inscriptions and the later epic Hammira Mahakavya record the dynasty.
Decline and legacy
Hammira sheltered Mongol rebels from Alauddin Khalji's army and refused to surrender them. After a long siege Ranthambore fell in 1301 and Hammira was killed. The fall became a celebrated theme of Rajput heroic literature; the fort passed to the Delhi Sultanate.
