Chahamanas of Jalor

1160 CE – 1311 CE (approx.) · capital Jalor

A Chauhan Rajput dynasty of Jalor in Marwar, famous for its last stand against the armies of Alauddin Khalji.

Origins

The Jalor branch of the Chahamanas (Chauhans) descended from the Chahamanas of Naddula. Kirtipala, a son of the Naddula king Alhana, captured the hill fort of Jalor from the Paramaras around 1160 and founded a separate line, known as the Songara Chauhans after the fort's Sonagiri hill.

Rule and society

The kings held a strong fort controlling routes between Gujarat and the Indo-Gangetic plain, and acted at times as allies or vassals of the Chaulukyas of Gujarat and later the Delhi Sultanate. Udayasimha extended the kingdom and repelled Iltutmish. Jain temples and inscriptions at Jalor record the patronage of merchants and rulers alike.

Decline and legacy

Kanhadadeva resisted Alauddin Khalji, who took Siwana and then besieged Jalor, capturing it in 1311; the king and his son Viramadeva were killed. The story became the subject of the 15th-century epic Kanhadade Prabandha. Jalor passed to the Delhi Sultanate.
