Consoranni

300 BCE – 56 BCE (approx.)

Pyrenean people of the upper Salat valley who gave their name to the Couserans district of the Ariège.

Origins

Known from Pliny and later Roman sources, the Consoranni lived in the central Pyrenees in the modern Ariège, between the Convenae and the Volcae Tectosages. Little else is recorded of them before the Roman conquest.

Rule and society

Decline and legacy

Their land came under Roman control during the conquest of Aquitania. Their chief town, Lugdunum Consoranorum, later took the name of a bishop, Saint-Lizier, and the region kept the name Couserans.
