Convenae

72 BCE – 56 BCE (approx.) · capital Lugdunum Convenarum

Mixed community gathered by Pompey in the central Pyrenees, whose town became Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges.

Origins

Their name means those who came together. According to Jerome, around 72 BCE Pompey, returning from his war against Sertorius in Hispania, settled defeated fighters and mountain people at Lugdunum in the upper Garonne valley.

Rule and society

The community mixed Iberian, Aquitanian and Roman elements and quickly adopted Roman ways. Its town had a forum, temple, baths and theatre.

Decline and legacy

Their land was absorbed into Roman Aquitania; Caesar's legate Crassus campaigned in the region in 56 BCE. Lugdunum Convenarum became Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, with its Romanesque cathedral, and the region kept the name Comminges.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
