Volcae Tectosages

300 BCE – 106 BCE (approx.) · capital Tolosa

Celtic people of Toulouse, kin of the Galatians of Anatolia, whose sacred gold was seized by a Roman consul in 106 BCE.

Origins

The Volcae were a Celtic people who settled in Languedoc in the 3rd century BCE. The Tectosages held the western part around Tolosa (Toulouse) on the Garonne. Other bands of the same name joined the migrations into the Balkans and Anatolia, where the Galatian Tectosages settled around Ancyra.

Rule and society

Tolosa controlled the corridor between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Strabo describes a rich sanctuary where gold and silver were sunk in sacred lakes. They became allies of Rome after the conquest of the Province in 121 BCE.

Decline and legacy

In 107 BCE they rebelled with the help of the migrating Cimbri and Tigurini. The consul Quintus Servilius Caepio retook Tolosa in 106 BCE and seized its treasure, the gold of Tolosa, which vanished on the way to Rome. Their land became part of Gallia Narbonensis.
