Grenada

1974 CE – present · capital St George's

Spice island independent since 1974, scene of a socialist revolution in 1979 and a US invasion in 1983.

Origins

The Colony of Grenada became independent on 7 February 1974 under Eric Gairy, amid strikes and protests against his rule and his feared Mongoose Gang. It remained a Commonwealth realm with the British monarch as head of state.

Rule and society

On 13 March 1979 the New Jewel Movement led by Maurice Bishop overthrew Gairy and formed the People's Revolutionary Government, the first revolution in the English-speaking Caribbean. It expanded literacy, health and cooperatives, allied with Cuba, which helped build the Point Salines airport, and postponed elections. A rival faction under Bernard Coard placed Bishop under arrest, and on 19 October 1983 Bishop and several ministers were executed.

To the present

On 25 October 1983 the United States and Caribbean allies invaded, removing the military council. Elections in 1984 restored parliamentary rule. Keith Mitchell served as prime minister for many years, Hurricane Ivan wrecked the island in 2004, and Dickon Mitchell took office in 2022.
