Karauli State

1348 CE – 1949 CE (approx.) · capital Karauli

The Jadaun Rajput state of eastern Rajasthan, whose rulers claimed descent from Krishna's Yadava clan and whose capital grew around the Madan Mohan temple.

Origins

The Jadaun Rajputs, claiming descent from the Yadavas, ruled around Bayana and Timangarh before the 14th century. In 1348 Arjun Pal founded the town of Karauli, which became the capital of the state.

Rule and society

Karauli was a hilly, largely rural state on the Chambal ravines. Its Maharajas accepted Mughal overlordship and later paid tribute to the Marathas. The temple of Madan Mohan, a form of Krishna, made the town a pilgrimage centre, and red sandstone from local quarries was used for its palaces. In 1817 Karauli signed a treaty with the British.

Decline and legacy

Karauli joined the Matsya Union in 1948, which merged into Rajasthan in 1949. It is now a district of Rajasthan.
