Kingdom of Jembrana

1700 CE – 1882 CE (approx.) · capital Negara

Small, thinly peopled kingdom of western Bali, notable for its Bugis Muslim settlers and its position facing Java.

Origins

Jembrana occupied the forested western tip of Bali, facing Java across the Bali Strait. Its early history is poorly documented: a local dynasty emerged around 1700, and the area was repeatedly dominated by its more powerful neighbours, especially the Kingdom of Buleleng and the Kingdom of Badung.

Rule and society

With little irrigated land, Jembrana was poorer than the southern Balinese kingdoms. Bugis seafarers from Sulawesi settled at Loloan near Negara in the 17th and 18th centuries, adding a Muslim trading community to the Hindu Balinese population and linking the kingdom to the shipping routes of the Java Sea.

Decline and legacy

Jembrana came under Dutch control together with Buleleng after the 1849 expedition and was placed under direct colonial administration in 1882. It later became a regency of Bali province in Indonesia.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
