Kuthar State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Subathu

A small Rajput hill state in the Shimla hills, part of whose land became the British cantonment of Subathu.

Origins

The ruling family claimed Rajput descent and tradition dates the state to around 1500. Its early history is not reliably documented.

Rule and society

Kuthar was a small hill state near the Gambhar river. It was occupied by the Gurkhas of the Kingdom of Nepal in the early 19th century. After the Anglo-Nepalese War the British restored its Rana in 1815 but kept Subathu, which became one of their first hill cantonments.

Decline and legacy

Kuthar merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948 and is now part of Solan district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
