Principality of Correggio

1452 CE – 1635 CE · capital Correggio

The small Emilian state of the da Correggio lords, birthplace of the painter Antonio Allegri, called Correggio.

Origins

The da Correggio family had ruled the town of Correggio, between Reggio and Carpi, since the 12th century and had been powerful in Parma. In 1452 Emperor Frederick III recognised their lands as a county, raised to a principality in 1616.

Rule and society

The counts governed a small farming territory and a fortified town with a lively court. Veronica Gambara, poet and widow of Count Giberto, ruled as regent in the early 16th century and corresponded with leading writers. The painter Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, was born in the town around 1489. The rulers depended on the protection of the emperor and their Este neighbours.

Decline and legacy

Prince Siro da Correggio was accused of minting debased coins and was deposed by the emperor in 1630. In 1635 the principality was sold to Francesco I d'Este and joined to the Duchy of Modena and Reggio.
