Veronica Gambara

1485–1550 · 16th century

Veronica Gambara was an Italian Renaissance poet and stateswoman from Brescia. She married Giberto X, lord of Correggio, in 1509 and after his death in 1518 governed the small state for her sons, defending it during the Italian Wars. Her court attracted writers and artists, and she corresponded with Pietro Bembo, Pietro Aretino and others. Her sonnets and letters made her one of the best-known women poets of her age.
