Verritus

fl. 58 CE · 1st century

Verritus was a leader of the Frisii in the mid-1st century CE, named by Tacitus together with Malorix. In 58 CE the two travelled to Rome to ask Nero to let their people keep lands near the Rhine reserved for Roman troops. Noticing foreign envoys seated among the senators at Pompey's Theatre, they boldly sat there too, and Nero granted them Roman citizenship but ordered the Frisii off the land.
