Republic of Sassari

1272 CE – 1323 CE (approx.) · capital Sassari

A self-governing Sardinian city-republic that rose from the ruins of the Judicate of Logudoro and wrote its laws partly in Sardinian.

Origins

After the death of Adelasia ended the Judicate of Logudoro in 1259, the growing town of Sassari took control of its own affairs and part of the surrounding territory. From 1272 it governed itself as a commune under Pisan influence, before allying with the Republic of Genoa in 1294.

Rule and society

The free commune was led by a podestà sent from Genoa and local councils. Its statutes of 1316, the Statuti Sassaresi, survive in Latin and Sardinian versions and regulated trade, farming and justice. Sassari lived from grain, livestock and trade through Porto Torres.

Decline and legacy

In 1323 Sassari submitted to the Infante Alfonso of the Kingdom of Aragon at the start of the Aragonese conquest, becoming part of the new Kingdom of Sardinia. It revolted several times in the following years.
