Samthar State

1735 CE – 1950 CE (approx.) · capital Samthar

A Gujar-ruled principality in Bundelkhand near Jhansi, unusual among the region's Rajput-ruled states.

Origins

Samthar's ruling family were Gujars who served the Bundela rulers of Datia and established their own chiefship around Samthar in the 1730s as Bundela authority fragmented. The British recognised it by treaty in 1817.

Rule and society

Samthar was a salute state of the Bundelkhand Agency, governed by a Raja over a compact, mainly agricultural territory. Few details of its internal history are recorded in standard sources.

Decline and legacy

Samthar acceded to India after 1947 and was absorbed by 1950. The town lies in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
