Sitamau State

1701 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Sitamau

A Rathore Rajput state of Malwa, branch of the Ratlam house, whose prince Raghubir Sinh became a noted historian.

Origins

Sitamau was founded in 1701 by Keshav Das, a member of the Rathore family of Ratlam, who received the territory as his own holding. Its rulers belonged to the same line that founded Ratlam and Sailana.

Rule and society

The Rajas ruled a small plateau territory of wheat and opium. In the 18th century the state paid tribute to Sindhia, and after 1818 it came under British paramountcy as a salute state of the Malwa Agency. Maharaj Kumar Raghubir Sinh founded a research library on Indian history at Sitamau.

Decline and legacy

Sitamau joined Madhya Bharat in 1948 and Madhya Pradesh in 1956. The Raghubir Library remains a centre for historical research in Mandsaur district.
