Vala State

1740 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Vallabhipur

A small Gohil Rajput state in eastern Kathiawar whose capital stood on the ruins of Valabhi, the great early medieval city of the Maitrakas.

Origins

Vala was founded around 1740 by a junior branch of the Gohil Rajputs who ruled Bhavnagar State. Its town, Vala or Vallabhipur, lay at the site of ancient Valabhi, capital of the Maitraka kingdom and a renowned Buddhist and Jain centre of learning.

Rule and society

The Thakor ruled a modest agricultural territory within the Kathiawar Agency. Few details of the state's internal history are recorded; the site is better known for the excavations and inscriptions of ancient Valabhi than for its 18th and 19th century rulers.

Decline and legacy

After accession to India Vala was merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948; it now lies in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
