Maitraka dynasty

c. 475–776 · 5th century · Also known as Maitrakas

The Maitraka dynasty ruled western India from about 475 to 776 from their capital at Valabhi in Saurashtra, now Vala in Gujarat. Founded by Bhatarka, a general of the Gupta Empire, they became independent as Gupta power faded. Valabhi was a renowned centre of Buddhist and Jain learning, where the Jain canon was written down at a council in the 5th century. The dynasty fell to Arab raids from Sindh.
