Maison Carrée

c. 2 CE · 1st century

The Maison Carrée is a Roman temple in Nîmes, southern France, built under Augustus and dedicated around the turn of the era to his grandsons and adopted heirs Gaius and Lucius Caesar. It is one of the best-preserved Roman temples anywhere, a model of classical architecture that inspired Thomas Jefferson's Virginia State Capitol, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
