Abba Jifar II

1861–1932 · 20th century

Abba Jifar II was king of Jimma, the richest of the Oromo Gibe kingdoms, from 1878 to 1932. In 1882 he submitted to Menelik II and paid tribute, which allowed Jimma to keep its internal autonomy, and he helped bring neighbouring Janjero under Ethiopian rule. His capital Jiren prospered on coffee and trade, and after his death Jimma was fully absorbed into the Ethiopian Empire.
