Abhira people

Also known as Abhiras

The Abhiras were a pastoral people of western and central India mentioned in the Mahabharata, the Puranas and inscriptions. Abhira chiefs served as generals under the Western Satraps, and in the 3rd century CE one of them, Ishvarasena, founded a kingdom around Nashik as Satavahana power declined. The Ahir community has traditionally been linked with them.
