Adalbero of Reims

d. 989 · 10th century · Also known as Adalbero, Archbishop of Reims

Adalbero was Archbishop of Reims from 969 until his death in 989. After the death of the last Carolingian king, Louis V, in 987, he led the assembly of nobles and bishops that elected Hugh Capet as king of the Franks instead of the Carolingian claimant Charles of Lorraine, and he crowned him. He was also a patron of learning, employing the scholar Gerbert of Aurillac, the future Pope Sylvester II.
