Aetolian League

4th–2nd century BCE · 4th century BCE

The Aetolian League was a federation of the cities and tribes of Aetolia in west-central Greece that became a leading power in the third century BCE. It dominated Delphi and the Amphictyony after defending the sanctuary against the Gauls in 279 BCE. First an ally of Rome against Macedon, it then sided with Antiochus III and after its defeat in 189 BCE became a subordinate ally of Rome.
