Agis III

d. 331 BCE · 4th century BCE

Agis III was a Eurypontid king of Sparta from 338 to 331 BCE. While Alexander the Great was campaigning in Asia, he organised a Greek revolt against Macedonian rule with Persian money, gathering allies in the Peloponnese and besieging Megalopolis. Antipater, Alexander's regent in Macedon, defeated and killed him at the Battle of Megalopolis in 331 BCE, ending the last attempt by Sparta to challenge Macedon.
