Akengbuwa
Akengbuwa was Olu, or king, of the Itsekiri kingdom of Warri in the western Niger Delta in the early 19th century. After his death in 1848 rival royal houses could not agree on a successor, and the throne remained vacant until 1936. In the meantime governors of the river, chosen from leading Itsekiri trading families, held power and dealt with the European palm-oil traders.
