Al-Hira
Al-Hira was an ancient city in southern Iraq, south of modern Kufa near the Euphrates, capital of the Arab Lakhmid kings from the late 3rd century until 602. A centre of Arab Christianity and early Arabic poetry, it served the Sasanian Empire as a frontier base facing Rome and the desert tribes. It surrendered to the Muslim Arabs under Khalid ibn al-Walid in 633 and declined after Kufa was founded nearby.
