Al-Musta'li

1074–1101 · 11th century

Al-Musta'li (1074–1101) was the ninth Fatimid caliph, ruling from 1094 to 1101. A younger son of al-Mustansir, he was placed on the throne by the vizier al-Afdal in preference to his elder brother Nizar, splitting the Ismaili movement into Musta'li and Nizari branches. During his reign the First Crusade reached Syria, and the crusaders took Jerusalem from the Fatimids in 1099.
