al-Musta'sim

Also known as al-Mustaʿsim

Al-Musta'sim was the last Abbasid caliph to rule from Baghdad. When Mongol forces under Hulagu Khan captured the city in February 1258, he was executed and the House of Wisdom was destroyed. His death ended the Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad, which had ruled since 750, and cleared the way for the establishment of the Ilkhanate in Iran and Iraq.
